Description of Folklore Categories

Folklore Studies can be organized into three main categories: Verbal, Partly Verbal, and Non-Verbal Folklore. Within each category, common genres are grouped together. Below is a brief explanation for the category types:

Verbal Folklore examines beliefs and knowledge passed down by word of mouth within folk groups. It is the most commonly studied Folklore type within the United States.

Partly Verbal Folklore contains genres which utilize both speech and action. For example Superstitions: with the recitation, gestures are employed as well.

Non-Verbal Folklore studies traditional materials and non-material traditions. It deals with genres such as architecture and costumes.
