Finding prices and suppliers of chemicals

Finding prices for all but the most commonly-used chemicals is a challenge.  Many suppliers require registration before they will give you a price quote.  Note the currency; chemicals may be supplied from several countries.

  • ICIS indicative chemical prices (for students)
Outdated (taken from the 28 August 2006 issue of Chemical Market Reporter) but fast and easy to use, and an adequate ballpark for basic assignments.
  • Sigma-Aldrich Catalog

Select "chemistry" and search for products. May include pricing or links to request pricing. Registration may be required to receive pricing info.
  • ChemIndustry.com

A directory and search engine for chemical and related industry professionals. Click the tab for "chemical info" and search by chemical name, CAS Number, or molecular formula.
  • BuyersGuideChem

Has "more than 330,000 supply sources." Links to suppliers. Use the "for buyers" box in the left column to search by name, CAS number, or pick from alpha list.
  • Google

Can be effective. Type in the chemical name, molecular formula, or common name/abbreviation and add 'price' or 'pricing.' Use caution when following links.

SciFinder Scholar

In the SciFinder Scholar database, click on "Locate" and then "Substance Identifier."  Type  the chemical name or CAS number. In the results, click the icon for Commercial Sources.  Then click the microscope icon next to a supplier of interest.  Some prices are listed; some notes recommend you contact the supplier.
